Hobbyists have been building model figures for generations. Whether you’re designing state of the art architectural pieces or the latest Gundam model from Japan, model building is a fun and interesting way to be creative. Within the world of model building, there are a few different schools of thought. The more time you spend building the more you move from the traditional kit based fun to creating custom individual pieces. Soon you plan to build a custom screw and utilize micro fasteners to create your perfect piece. Fun fact! In their earliest forms, all screws were custom made. Hand carving screws meant there was no standard and in 1928 the National Screw Thread Commission was created to fix that problem.

What you need to know before you start model building
- ScaleScale is huge. Well not really, scale is small. Essentially scale is how small your build is compared to the original. If the scale is 1:10 that means your model is one-tenth of the original size. Now, one-tenth is huge so you won’t likely see that in a kit, but generally, you’ll see common scales like 1:350 or even 1:720. By scaling down you’re creating something awesome but in tiny form.
- KitsMost model building comes from kits. Kits can be found just about anywhere, and are often sorted by skill-level. That being said, before long your newfound hobby of model building may transform into custom builds. Perhaps you utilize parts of model kits to create a new product. Overall though, your whole project will look great the more practice you get. Starting with kits is a great way to get practice.
- PaintPainting your model can bring it alive. No two model people paint alike, and it really sets your piece apart from every other kit. whether you build the model then paint it or paint then build, you will always enjoy this stage of your building process.
Modeling is a great part of any hobbyists skills. It can give you an opportunity to release your creative juices and spend time with your family. Whether you plan to build a custom miniature nuts and bolts for model making or use a kit to create an iconic landmark, model building is loads of fun.
